We had another successful (if a bit smaller) Lighted Truck Parade this year!! Thank you to all those who entered a vehicle in the parade to help spread some Christmas cheer in our community! Another big thank you to all of our members who came out to help with the many things that are necessary to put on an event like this one! And finally thank you to all those who came out tonight to watch the parade, we hope you enjoyed it!! And we hope that some of you have been inspired to put a vehicle of your own in next year's parade!

Wednesday 2 December 2015

These are just a few of the delicious treats that will be at the No. 1 Fire Hall after the parade on Friday! We will also be making fresh donuts throughout the evening!
A reminder that the parade will be departing the No. 1 Fire Hall at 6:30 pm and will head south on Cape Mudge Rd, turn right onto Noble Rd and then travel down to Cape Mudge Village. The parade will then come back up Green Rd to pass by the Cove Plaza and Quadra Elementary at which point it will turn left onto West Rd and will travel through Heriot Bay and return to the No. 1 Fire Hall via Heriot Bay Rd.
Donations to the food bank can be brought to the Fire Hall or there will be a truck at the end of the parade collecting donations along the parade route. We will see you all on Friday!

The countdown is on! Only 6 more days until the Lighted Truck Parade! Preparations are well underway and we are all very excited for the big night! Don't forget to bring your donations for the food bank to the No. 1 Hall after the parade and enjoy some Christmas treats. This year we will also have a team of "Elves" collecting donations as the parade passes by so have your donations ready and keep an eye out for one of our smaller trucks at the end of the parade. See you all there!

The lighted truck parade is less than three weeks away now! We want this parade to be the biggest one yet so we are encouraging anyone who is thinking about entering a vehicle to come on out and join the parade! You don't have to be a big truck, any and all vehicle types are welcome. And it's an excellent opportunity for some free advertising! We hope to keep this event growing every year so enter a vehicle and help spread some Christmas cheer!

Annual Summer BBQ

This year's golf tournament had a bit of a wet theme to it, although we were all looking forward to nice sunny weather while hitting the golf greens. Instead we were treated to rain, rain, and more rain. However, the undesirable weather wasn't going to keep us away from our tee time! Some of us even came a lot more prepared than others; right Mike? Here are a few winners to announce for the golf tournament.

  • Team Best Score: Lynn, Ken, and Dave
  • Men's Longest Drive: Richard
  • Women's Longest Drive: Sharon
  • Men's Closest to Snag: Luke
  • Women's Closest to Snag: Julie
  • Men's Closest to Pin: Richard
  • Women's Closest to Pin: Lynn
  • Best Dressed: Mike
  • Team Worst Score: Sharon, Julie, and Coleen (sorry guys but someone has to claim this title)

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and had a great game!

Finally, thanks to everyone who helped out with the BBQ this year. From setting up tables/chairs to cooking. Any small or big part you played made the BBQ a success. An especially big thanks to Jamie and Julie for all the prep and organization. A big shoutout to Brian for picking up and dropping off the big BBQ. We hope everyone enjoyed the food, the prizes, the people, and in the end just had a good time all around. Can't wait for next year!

P.S. Apologies for the lack of photos for this event. The rain didn't quite allow me to have it out all day snapping photos.

Vistors to Quadra

A message to the Quadra tourist.....

  • Everyone is legally bound to report a fire of any type particularly during these extreme conditions, even small campfires. It is law. If you see smoke of any kind, you must report it by calling 1-800-663-5555 or call *5555. You can also simply call 911.
  • If a fire is traced to origin, the party responsible can be held liable for all costs associated with fire containment and all damages caused by the blaze.
  • Under these conditions, fires can start from some of the most mundane sources. Constant vigilance is the key.
    • Sun magnified through the lens of a pair of reading glasses (yes, I fought a 3 acre fire started this way).
    • the tiniest ember from a cigarette butt (if you can't hold it in your fingers, it is not out) .
    • two rocks striking each other generating a spark.
    • vehicles that have pulled over into tall grass (to look at a map or answer a cell phone) have mufflers and catalytic converters which can easily cause ignition.
    • I just read an anecdotal description of a plastic wine glass acting as a magnifying lens almost starting a picnic table on fire.
  • Almost all rural industrial activities have been suspended where where machinery and or hand power tools such as chain saws are in use.
  • Currently, there are no open flame fires of any kind (this includes candles). Fireworks are also prohibited. Contained fire systems such as camp stoves are allowed.
  • Everyone should be on high alert. If you spot someone acting in a careless manner regarding fire safety, there is every reason it should be stopped immediately. It can be done in a friendly and courteous manner. Even visitors to the island have a right and responsibility to be FireSmart vigilant. Here on Quadra, it is a rural lifestyle we cherish most and what often attracts visitors to come and stay. There are many isolated homes and hobby farms that are hidden from plain view. A small fire anywhere on this island will most certainly directly affect someones home and or livelihood.
  • Enjoy the island and help us all protect what we have.

Total Fire Ban

Absolutely no briquette barbecues, tiki torches or propane fire pits are permitted. Propane barbecues and propane camping stoves are still allowed.
And just a reminder that all open fires are prohibited.
We would also like to remind all those that smoke to butt out responsibly.

Smoke on the island

We are experiencing heavy smoke in and around Quadra due to the many fires burning in the Coastal Region. Due to changing wind direction and speed it is difficult to determine how long the smoke will be in our area.
We would like to remind residents that all open burning is prohibited, this includes outdoor propane fire pits and torches.
We are encouraging residents to be diligent about reporting what they believe could be a fire. As the layer of smoke is thick at times, when calling 911 it is helpful to describe what you see (is it a haze of smoke or a column of smoke? Is it specific to an area or wide spread?)
Please continue to be cautious and watchful.
